Police PRO:You Can Embark On Demonstrations But...

The Public Relations Officer of the Greater Accra Police Command, DSP Freeman Tetteh has clarified that the police service is not stopping people from embarking on demonstrations. According to him, they are only pleading with groups to put on hold any demonstrations or mass activity. We are not asking anyone to stop demonstrating; we dont even have the power or law backing to do that. But the law entreats us to protect everyone who wants to embark on a demonstration, he said. One can recall that the Ghana Police Service issued a statement indicating that due to the massive presence of the police at the election petition hearing at the Supreme Court, and other personnel on stand-by, they will not be able to give protection to people who wants to embark on any mass activity including demonstrations and festivals. Speaking in an interview on Peace FMs evening news, DSP Tetteh indicated that groups can go on demonstrations or any activity of their choice, however, if the unforeseen happens, the organisers will be held responsible. All the personnel we have are almost occupied; that doesnt mean you should not embark on demonstrations or festivals or any other mass activity; you can, just that when property is destroyed and lives are lost the organisers will be held responsible...due to our security force at the Supreme Court, we will not be able to provide police men to offer protection for the demonstrators and that is why we are saying they should hold on with the demonstration until proceedings at the Supreme Court are over
