Lake Bosomtwe In Danger

Aquatic life in Lake Bosomtwi may be extinct within the next two years if fishing with cages introduced on the lake is not halted. According to a report by the Water Resources Commission (WRC), the lake and its catchment area, despite having a rich biological diversity, could be harmed with the use of cages containing algae. The report noted that this has resulted in the depletion of oxygen, causing the death of other organisms including aquatic life. According to the WRC report, there is no outlet for water in the lake to flow. This indicates that all pollutants from human intervention are bound to remain in the lake, and this situation is bound to increase concentration in the future. The lake is the only natural lake in Ghana and is one of six crater lakes in the world with distinctive features. The Ashantis consider the Lake Bosumtwi a sacred lake. Because of this, it is considered permissible to fish in the lake only from wooden planks.
