Tudu Fire: Fire Service Douses Blaze

Tens of shops, according to the Ghana Fire Service, were destroyed when fire gutted sections of the Makola Annex Two, popularly known as Tudu market in Accra. According to Assistant Divisional Officer of the Ghana Fire Service, Eric Nortey Nortey, the fire has however been brought under control. He also revealed that most of the items destroyed were cosmetic products and clothes. The fire, according to eyewitnesses, started around 19:00 GMT on Tuesday. The timely intervention of personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service however, ensured that the damage was kept to the barest minimum. Speaking to Citi News, an employee of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly who gave his name as Mr. Mynes, noted that the top priority of the Assembly was to ensure the security of the goods belonging to the market women. Several market women were forcing to enter the market to salvage their wares when Citi News reporters got to the scene. Some persons were also arrested for attempting to loot some shops amidst of the chaos. This market is the second to burn in three days. The Kantamanto market, one of the biggest in Accra, was completely burnt on Sunday night. The cause of that Kantamanto fire is yet to be established.
