Mountcrest University College launches B.J. da Rocha memorial lectures

Mountcrest University College (MCU), affiliate of the Kwame University of Science and Technology on Monday launched the B.J. da Rocha memorial lectures and Chair in Law and Politics. Justice VCRAC Crabbe, who launched the lectures at the British Council in Accra, urged Ghanaians to keep alive the memory and legacy of those who have served the nation well. He said most Ghanaians have cultivated the habit of tarnishing the image of heroes adding that character assassination should be eliminated from the society. Kwame Nkrumah died outside Ghana, J.B. Danquah died in prison and B.J, da Rocha was once imprisoned because he stood for certain principles and many other heroes continue to face different forms of humiliation in the country without being given any recognition, he said. Professor Joseph R.A. Ayee, Rector of MCU, said the B.J. da Rocha memorial lectures and Chair in Law and Politics was instituted to honour the memory and legacy of B.J. da Rocha, describing him as a distinguished statesman, politician, legal educator and barrister. Mr da Rocha was the foundation President of MCU from August 2008 until he died in February 2010. The three-day lectures will be on theme: The man B.J. da Rocha and on sub themes such as: B.J. da Rocha as Statesman, B.J. da Rocha as Legal Educator, and, B.J. da Rocha as Politician. According to Prof Ayee, the theme and sub-themes were chosen to enable more people to understand and appreciate the contribution of Mr da Rocha to Ghana, politics and legal education. He said the B.J. da Rocha Chair would advance knowledge, scholarship and teaching in the disciplines of law and politics. He said the university would very soon introduced other chairs like the John Evans Atta Mills Chair in Taxation and Democracy, VCRAC Crabbe Chair in Legislative Drafting, Peter Ala Adjeitey Chair in Governance and Politics, Ansa-Asare Chair in Innovation, Enterprise and Skills Development and host of other chairs.
