Gov't Does Not Control GBC Affairs

The Government has distanced itself from the decision by national broadcaster, the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation to cease the live telecast of the ongoing election petition trial. GBC has in the last few days hinted that it is contemplating halting its live telecast of the court proceedings due to huge financial constraints. The national broadcaster claims it loses over $66,000 a day in revenue as a result of the live telecast of the trial. But speaking to the media at the Flagstaff House on Thursday, the deputy Minister of Information and Media relations Murtala Mohammed said the financial loss claims by the GBC should provoke a debate as to why the corporation is unable to sustain its operations independent of government subvention in spite of the money they make. Government of Ghana doesnt constitute the GBC Board and doesnt constitute the management of GBC...it is all done by the National Media Commission Murtala Mohammed said. He added that I thought that GBC is a serious organization and I believe that the decision to telecast this live wasnt done out of sleep. I believe that there was some planning, budget and GBC would have known that this the duration the case is going to take us and this is how we need and how we are going to lose.
