Bantama MP: If 2012 Election Was The Most Transparent, Then We Have Been Dead A Long Time Ago

A Member of Parliament for Bantama Constituency; Hon. Kwabena Kokofu has said the 2012 elections cannot escape the challenge which the Electoral Commissioner, Dr. Afari Gyan wants Ghanaians to believe. He added that if the Chief Returning Officer, Dr. Afari Gyan in his statement wants to tell Ghanaians that the 2012 election was the most transparent ever then Ghana is moving towards danger as far as elections in the country is concerned. Making his point on Okay FM, he said that the Electoral Commissioner has led elections six uninterrupted times in the country; adding that if 2012 election was the most transparent, then we have been dead a long time ago despite his admission in court that there were irregularities in the last election. He further said that there are serious issues enshrined in the electoral processes in the country and to him these issues have not been established until now; stressing that people were not exposed to the knowledge of these problems and this has been why no issue has been raised about it. He hinted that Professor Adu-Boahen started this campaign against this electoral malpractice in 1992 when he wrote stolen verdict and therefore asked the NPP Parliamentarians to boycott Parliament though Article 64 was fresh in the constitution but did not put it to test. He again said that the NDC went to court in 2004 when Ex-President Kuffour was re-elected, to challenge his re-election but they could not do it because there were no evidence; adding that the NDC did not have enough courage to embark on their court case which made the country lose the opportunity to test this article in the constitution and the democratic principle as well as the electoral processes. He however said that Nana Addo and the leaders of the NPP want to put a stop to these challenges and the misunderstandings in elections as well as institutional elections which are gaining root in the country. He concluded that this is the time to test the electoral processes to correct the anomalies which rise in elections.
