Farmer, pregnant girls write BECE in Techiman

Matthias Banyuo, a 46-year-farmer, and a father of five children, and two pregnant girls are writing the on-going Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) in the Techiman Municipality. This came to light at the Nsuta Local Authority JHS Examination Centre, when Mr Alex Kyeremeh, Deputy Minister of Education, toured some examination centres in the Sunyani and Techiman Municipalities. He was accompanied by Mr Justice Samuel Adjei, Deputy Brong-Ahafo Regional Minister, and Dr George Adjei-Hinneh, the Regional Director of Education. They visited Ebenezer Presbyterian and Ridge Experimental JHS Centres in Sunyani and Chiraa SHS Centre at Chiraa in the Sunyani West District. The pregnant girls said that although some of their colleagues teased and taunted them that did not deter them from writing the BECE. At Techiman, the entourage toured Akumfi Ameyaw SHS and Techiman SHS examination centres and interacted with the candidates after they had written their first paper. Examination supervisors could not give reasons for the absence of 18 candidates, made up of 10 girls and eight boys. Mr Kyeremeh, who is also the Member of Parliament for Techiman North, advised the candidates to avoid examination malpractices and rather give up their best, saying examination is not a monster and so doesnt panic as you are asked to reproduce what you have learned. In a related development, Mr Kyeremeh said he had negotiated for scholarships for students, who would excel in the BECE, to enable them to further their education. Dr Adjei-Hinneh expressed concern that examination malpractices was high in the region and advised the candidates to avoid cheating as that could lead to the cancellation of their results.
