LMVCA: We Will Defy Police; Protest March In The Offing

The Let My Vote Count Alliance will like to serve notice to the Ghana Police Service and National Security about the preparedness of the group and like-minded Ghanaians to defy their unconstitutional order not allowing anyone or group to demonstrate in this country. It is shocking that President Mahama during his visit to the United Kingdom told his British hosts that Ghana is not a banana Republic as everyone is free to demonstrate in Ghana without being prevented by the authorities. Yet the situation in Ghana is opposite to what President Mahama describes. Indeed the Police, through DCOP Rose Atinga Bio, have issued directives banning all demonstrators due to the ongoing Supreme Court case, where she argues, that all Police personnel in the country are needed to beef up security on the premises of the court. On that very day the President extolled Ghanas virtues of not being a banana Republic to the Brits, the Ghana Police Service declined requests by the LMVCA to hold a protest march on the streets of Accra because, in their words, they were chasing armed robbers and also combating the fire outbreaks in the country. We, hereby, serve notice to the Police and National Security that we are going to defy them and embark on our protest march. We will not allow our constitutional rights to be trampled upon by the Police. The law requires us only to inform them about an impending public gathering and not wait for them to give us the go ahead. It is clear to us that there is a strategy by the Executive supported by the Police to stop Ghanaians from demonstrating. We will not allow anyone to trample on our rights. All we are telling the Police is that they will hear about the date of the protest march in a press statement. ......signed...... David Asante Spokesperson, LMVCA
