Kaneshie Footbridge is Safe - Civil Engineer

A civil engineer, Mohammed Abdullai has allayed the fears of users of the Kaneshie market foot bridge who say it could cause a major disaster. This is after Citi News reported the various defects on the bridges including falling concrete and instability of the bridges. But speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show on Thursday, Mr. Abdullai asserted that these are normal features for bridges. It is really not a problem when you hear of the vibration there. The debris that falls from the top of the bridge is known as fillers. They are the ones that are used in connecting the plate on top of the bridge. However, I know that that filler is almost falling off and that is why someone was saying that cement is falling from the top. According to him, the vibration which pedestrians experience on the bridge is normal. When you are designing such foot bridges or ordinary bridges, you think about the earthquake and such designs have to incorporate the earthquake concept so that you have the resonance. Abdullai however admitted the foot bridges still need some maintenance saying, the only aspect of it that we need to ensure that the appropriate authorities would have to refill and if there is some corrosion of some of the plate, they have to remove the plates and then put them back. He added that the Assembly should ensure traders do not sell on the bridge.
