Be Patient With Govt Roads Minister Tells Ashaiman Residents

Minister of Roads and Highways Alhaji Amidu Amin Sulemani has asked the people of Ashaiman to be patient with government in the completion of a network of roads in the suburb. What we are saying is that not everything can be done at the same time, he said on Thursday, during an inspection tour of roads under construction in the town, so the people should be patient with government. Alhaji Amin Sulemanis inspection tour took him to project sites at the Tema Motorway Underpass, Adjeikojo, Jericho and Agric Road. He conceded that government has the responsibility to ensure that people and businesses move freely with the provision of roads but they should give us time. Ashaiman residents, mostly made up of the youth, on June 24, 2013 mounted blockades on the main Ashaiman-Tema Road, preventing motorists from moving. They claimed the road project in the town has delayed unduly. They burnt tyres and attempted setting ablaze a Metro Mass Transport bus. Funds not main problem The Municipal Chief Executive Officer of Ashaiman, Numo Adinortey Addison, adduced few hours of that incident that work on the road projects had stalled because the contractor had complained about lack of funds. This was not the case according to the Deputy Director at Urban Roads, Mr De-Graft Afful, who was with the Minister during Thursday's inspection tour. Funds is not the main problem but the problem has to do with the delivery, he told journalists It is not like [the contractor] stopped completely because he doesnt have money but there are some challenges and we have to do some re-designing, he explained. He added that work stalled because the road design was going to affect some property in the town and we cant go through peoples property because of the road. So we tried to minimize the impact as much as possible. Member of Parliament for the Ashaiman Constituency Alfred Agbesi appealed to the Roads Minister to impress upon all stakeholders to see to the completion of the project.
