The ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) has indicated that the economy of the country is not broke hence the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has no basis to say that it is. One can recall the economic team of the NPP issued a statement informing Ghanaians of how tattered the economy is and suggested various options for the Mahama led administration to follow. Samuel George, a member of the Communication team of the NDC, speaking on the issue said the NPP is just trying to be mischievous because the Ghanaian economy is resilient. According to him, the economic team of the NPP did Ghanaians a great disservice by painting a wrong picture of the economy, adding a country with a GDP ratio of 43% cannot be broke; it is just being faced with a few challenges�. Speaking to Suhiyini Alhassan on Radio Gold�s Alhaji and Alhaji, Samuel George stated: �Let me state without any equivocation that the Ghanaian economy is not broke. The economy is robust and resilient. In 2012 last year, we raised revenue of 16 billion Ghana cedis; that possibly cannot be an economy which is broke�this is clear mischief on the part of the opposition�On what basis did a former finance minister, Mr Yaw Osafo Maafo reach the conclusion that a country with a GDP ratio of 43% is broke�. He emphasised that it will be wrong on the part of anyone to say that the economy is in a good shape, stating: �If you say there is no problem with the economy, you are telling a huge lie but you ask yourself, are debts sustainable; yes it is. Most of the debts we are incurring are debts which are self-financing� �The economy is challenged but not broke. The major challenge this economy is facing is the Single Spine Salary Scheme (SSSS). As a nation we need to stimulate a relevance or otherwise of the Single Spine Policy Structure. Is this the way we want to continue as a nation. The president is not sitting down and folding his arms. As part of government initiative, it has decided to expand the tax net. People make very fat salaries in this country and they don�t pay tax. As a country we decide on where to go. Is development our agenda�let us make up our mind how we want to go as a country...� he intimated.
