Supreme Court ruling: Media urged to be professional

Right Reverend Professor Emmanuel Martey, Moderator of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church, Ghana, has implored the media to abide by their ethics and ensure professionalism in their reportage as the country awaits the verdict on the election petition. He said the public had a right to true and accurate information and the media had the responsibility to provide such information as well as educate the populace on the ruling of the Election Petition by the Supreme Court. He added that the media should not be used as a platform to defame peoples� reputation and to cause mayhem in the country. Speaking at a colloquium in Accra on Thursday, Rt. Rev Martey in an address read for him by Dr Samuel Ayette Nyampong, Clark of the General Assembly, lauded the media for supporting the Presbyterian University College of Ghana (PUCG) over the years. �...it is through their (media) efforts that the University has now come into the limelight,� he noted. The colloquium formed part of activities earmarked for the 10th anniversary celebrations of the PUCG on the theme: �Ten Years of Presbyterian University Education in Ghana�. Activities planned for the anniversary celebrations include: �What Do You Know�, debate at the Okwahu Campus of the University on October 6, anniversary lecture to be delivered by Professor Emeritus Naa Nabila, President of the National House of Chiefs and a congregation and awards night to climax the activities on November 23. Rt. Rev Martey said amidst all the teething challenges that the University faced from the beginning, many successes had been achieved making it (University) one of the first five universities in Ghana and among the top 100 universities in Africa. The PUCG can today boosts of four campuses situated at Asante Akyem, Okwahu, Agogo and the Temale campuses with a student population of over 2,000 from the initial enrolment of 55. It currently also have over 200 staff members. Rt. Rev Martey said the Presbyterian hallmark of discipline continued to guide lecturers and students alike who shone everywhere they were work or operated. Mr Sam Okudzeto, Chairman of the PUCG Council, announced that new programmes had been developed making current programmes being offered to be ten (10), adding, more programmes would be introduced in September this year. He said plans were far advanced for the University to embark on commercial agriculture in areas such as fish farming, crop farming, cattle rearing as well as the processing of agricultural products. Mr Okudzeto said the PUCG was also developing a blueprint aimed at improving the infrastructural development of its various campuses to enable it see more developments in the near future. Professor Kofi Sraku-Lartey, President of the PUCG, said November 24 this year would be exactly ten years when the University was established, saying �...we have to put our Agenda 2013 into operation. This Agenda would include the celebration of our tenth anniversary and preparations for applying for a charter to become an autonomous university.�
