Lecturers and staff of the public Universities will be smiling all the way to the bank from today, as the government has released a total of GH₵25 million to pay the arrears owed them as well as other service providers in the nations universities.
�The processes for the payment have already begun and members of UTAG will see the monies reflected in their accounts,� assured Mr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, a Deputy Minister of Information and Media Relations.
He was updating journalist on the current situation on payment of arrears owed members of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) and other university service providers at the Flagstaff Kanda House in Accra, yesterday.
UTAG last week, threatened to embark on a strike action from August 1, if the government failed to respect an agreement regarding the payment schedule of 2012 market premium arrears by July 31.
According to the group, although its members had fulfilled their side of the agreement during the negotiation process after their earlier strike a couple of months ago, government had not been forthcoming on its responsibilities.
Last April; UTAG called off a 13-day strike after meeting with government and stakeholders where an agreement was reached that their arrears from 2012 would be paid in a four-month installment package from April to July.
