A beneficiary of non-formal education has appealed to the government to provide adequate support to the Non-Formal Education Division (NFED) of the Ministry of Education to enable it improve literacy among uneducated adults.
Madam Florence Adutwumwaa, a 56-year-old beneficiary of the program made the appeal after she emerged the overall best among 30 participants in a literacy competition organised by the Asante Akim South District Office of the NFED at Juaso.
The 30 adult learners competed in reading and writing and the competition formed part of preparation towards this year�s celebration of the International Literacy Day which falls on September 8.
Madam Adutwumwaa has been selected to represent the District at a regional competition to be held soon.
She said the programme had been very useful to her and called on others who could not have formal education to take advantage of the programme.
According to her she had never stepped into a classroom before but can now read and write and lauded the facilitators for their dedication and commitment.
Mr. Isaac Afriyie, the District Coordinator of NFED, commended the participants for their performances and urged them to serve as ambassadors for the programme in their localities.
He said adult literacy classes for the 19th batch of learners would commence soon and called on interested persons to take advantage to become literate.
