Pupils in basic schools have been urged to pursue the study of Science and Mathematics to help enhance socio-economic development. The Director of Basic, Stephen Adu, said the subjects have immensely contributed to the progress of nations. Mr. Adu was speaking at the first Science, Technology, Mathematics and Innovation Clinic for Basic schools of the La Dade Kotopon Municipality in Accra. The STEMIE Clinic was under the theme: Gender, Science Technology and Innovations- our Benefit, our Future. Pupils from schools in La Dade Kotopon mounted exhibitions as part of their contribution to discover young Scientists. Mr. Adu said Scientific and Mathematical Knowledge as well as ICT skills will significantly, contribute to the country's socio-economic development and improvement of quality life. He urged all pupils who participated in the clinic to take the program seriously to enhance their interest in science, technology, Mathematics and Innovation in education. The La Dade Kotopon Municipal Director of Education, Mrs. EVelyn Owusu Oduro said the main objective of STEMIE Clinic is to popularize the study and practice of science at all levels of the country's educational system. It is also to promote gender balance in the study and application of science in order to bridge the gap that exists between boys and girls. She said the time has come for the Ghanaian child to be fully equipped with the necessary scientific and technological knowledge and skills to make him or her marketable. Mrs. Owusu Oduro appealed to the general public not to see science as a difficult subject but something which is indispensable in national development. She thanked La Dade Kotopon Municipal Assembly and all those who supported to initiate the STEMIE Clinic in the Municipality. The Municipal Chief Executive for La Dade Kotopon, Madam Rita Odoley Sowah, said lack of resources and the absence of innovative teaching approaches in teaching the science and mathematics drive away many pupils from pursuing further courses in the sciences. She said government will continue to supply computers and improve infrastructure to many schools to enhance the teaching of science and technology. The Member of Parliament, MP, for La Dade Kotopn, Nii Amasa Namoale, suggested that the country's education should be more science and technology oriented. This, he, said will ease the human resource constraints of investors. He urged youth to accept the study of science and technology as a challenge and a result of globalisation which has and scientific and technological literacy indispensable.
