Pressure group, Alliance for Accountable Governance (AFAG) has suggested that the appointment of a Chairman of the Electoral Commission (EC) should be renewed every five years subject to a performance contract.
The group has also proposed an amendment to the constitutional provision that makes the Electoral Commission Chairman stay in office till retirement.
AFAG�s proposal comes in the wake of numerous calls for electoral reforms in Ghana which was captured in the judgement of the Supreme Court Justices.
President John Mahama has pledged his commitment to such reforms.
AFAG�s President, Dr. Nana Ayew Afriyie in an interview with Citi News called for the State to lead the process of electoral reforms.
�We should make conscious efforts as a nation to bring confidence back to the people and also in the Electoral Commission to curtail the difficulties we have encountered over the years during elections.�
Dr. Afriyie said the EC should be open, transparent, accessible and accountable to the people before, during and after elections.
He further suggested that the next Electoral Commissioner should be a retired High Court Judge.
�Looking at what has happened elsewhere you will realize that in Pakistan the Electoral Commissioner is always a retired High Court Judge; it is appropriate that we can as a country use the same practice.�
