20-year-old man suspected to be part of a group that engages in robbery operations around the Accra Metropolis was yesterday arraigned for illegal possession of firearms.
Somaila Abdulai, unemployed, was arrested after police found guns and live ammunitions on top of his roof.
He was put before an Accra Circuit Court presided over by Francis Obiri and charged with illegal possession of firearms without lawful authority.
The accused person denied any wrongdoing and had been remanded in police custody on the orders of the trial judge.
Abdulai would re-appear in court on October 10, 2013.
Narrating events leading to the arrest of the suspect, DSP Patrick Morkeh told the court that the accused person was unemployed and lived at Kwame Nkrumah Circle, while the complainants were police officers from the Regional Police Command in Accra.
According to him, on September 24, 2013, the Regional Police were given a tip-off about some young men with guns and ammunitions around the Nkrumah Circle area who were engaged in robbery operations in the Accra Metropolis.
He said based on that information, a team was dispatched to the place and upon arrival, searched the area and found the accused person whose demeanour looked suspicious; so he was arrested and a search was conducted around where he was found.
Furthermore, he said, when the police did not find anything they checked the roof of his room which was a wooden structure and found two locally-manufactured pistols, one AK 47 rifle with live ammunitions, seven revolvers with live ammunitions, one Mac 4 with live ammunitions among others.
The police officer noted that the accused person denied ownership of the firearms but could not tell the police who they were for.
He stated that the 20-yearold was arrested and arraigned after police concluded investigations.
