Government has appealed to organised labour to exercise restraint on its intended nationwide strike slated for the 18th of next month. Reacting to the strike at the Flagstaff House in Accra, a Deputy Minister of Information and Media Relations, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, said the government is constrained by the PURC Act to intervene to reduce the latest utility price hikes. He said even if the tariffs are reduced to at least 60% as was recommended by the Government Technical Working Group, it will be difficult for the government to raise GH� 207 million to pay for the difference. Meanwhile, Labour Consultant, Mohammed Affum has called for the speedy resolution of what is becoming an impasse between the TUC and government over hikes in utility tariffs. The TUC last night threatened a nationwide strike on the 18th of next month, if the tariffs are not reduced. Speaking to Radio Ghana, Mr Affum said in order for the impasse to be resolved there should be a compromise from both sides. He told Radio Ghana�s correspondent that the strike will cause inconveniences and economic loss.
