The 2012 Presidential and Parliamentary elections caused fear which created tension between the two major political parties, New Patriotic Party (NPP) and National Democratic Congress (NDC), Christian Council of Ghana (CCG) has said.
Speaking at the re-launch of CCG�s 2012 election observation report in Kumasi, Rev. Dr. Kwabena Opuni Frimpong, General Secretary of CCG, indicated that politicization of national issues culminated into the hurling of insults by members of the two parties.
This, he noted could trigger civil unrest.
According to him, the media also offered their plat-form to hot-headed political activities and propagandists, who muddied the waters.
The CCG General Secretary said though calmness prevailed in the country, there was the need to sustain the effort to deepen the democratic process.�
Gradually, we are losing objectivity and depth in public discourse by parading political activists and propagandists for discussions on national issues.� He added.
He pledged the CCG�s commitment to continuously partner civil society organizations to improve the democratic progress, asserting that the timing for the creation of constituencies ought to be reviewed to ensure progress.
He also called for serious reforms in the electoral system in order to sustain the democratic gains.
The CCG has called for public education about the electoral system since misconception and verification in the Electoral 2012 among the political parties and intellectuals fueled mistrust in the country, he stressed.
