NPP Aspirants Told To Sue Detractors

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Northern Region on Thursday urged aspirants of the party in the upcoming elections for executive position not to hesitate in taking legal action against any individual or groups whose actions would seek to defame and tarnish their hard-won reputations. This was contained in a press statement issued in Tamale on Thursday and signed by Dr. Clifford Abdallah Braimah, Northern Regional Secretary of the party. It said it had come to the notice of the party that some aspirants had started using some youth groups to write fabricated stories about their competitors, a development it said was unfortunate. The statement urged members of the party to use the process of re-electing new executives to re-organise the party at all levels adding that People who wish to have their favourite party members elected are encouraged to campaign vigorously, devoid of insults and fabrications meant to tarnish the image of others. The party will not intervene for any member who is dragged to the law court for defamation of another party member and we therefore encourage any party member who feels defamed by any person not to hesitate to seek legal remedy as a citizen of Ghana, the statement advised. It also cautioned that it was serving notice that the party would not sit back and allow individuals or groups to drag the image of the party into disrepute and would initiate disciplinary actions against such individuals or groups. The statement also warned aspirants to regulate the activities of their supporters during this period of internal electioneering campaigns to bring sanity to avoid being dragged to the disciplinary committee as well as to the Regional and Constituency Election Committees. The statement also cautioned media houses and journalists not to allow their mediums to be used to defame others and urged them to verify the existence of groups who come with press releases targeting individuals for defamation to ensure that sanity and to maintain peace.
