Rawlings Eulogises Late Harry Sawyer

Former President Jerry John Rawlings on Thursday eulogized the late Harry Sawyer, describing the fallen statesman as a stabilizing force in government, society, politics and instrumental in the development of Ghana. He said the former Education Minister and Council of State Chairman was someone who never hesitated to share his wisdom and concerns about things, and wondered how Harry would feel about the situation the country finds herself today. If people had taken his wise counsel seriously, things would have been different.thank God for the role he played. We should not be seen as wasting our lives for the restoration of the country he said. Former President Rawlings made the comments when he commiserated with the family of the late Harry Sawyer at his Labone residence in Accra. He used the occasion to draw attention to the worrying perception of corruption in the body politic of the country. He said though President John Mahama was striving to do well, it behooved on every Ghanaian to lend support to the leader, to correct the negativities currently plaguing the nation. "The young president is doing what he can and he has invited all to get involved in fighting some of the negative tendencies in the country. I sincerely hope that we would be able to restore some sanity in the not too long future", he said. Mr Rawlings urged government to give the late Harry Sawyer, who played a pivotal role in his administration, a deserving burial. Mr Henry Romulus Sawyerr, a chartered surveyor, died at the age of 87 last Thursday. He was a former member of the Council of State, former Minister of Transport and Communications, former Minister of Education and former Member of Parliament. He was decorated with the highest honour of the state, Companion of the Order of the Volta, by the late President John Evans Atta Mills.
