Defective CCTV Cameras At Accra Mall?

After the Westgate Mall Attack in Kenya, which took the lives of over 60 people, including Ghanas own renowned Prof. Kofi Awonor, many recreational centers and public buildings all over the African Continent have taken steps to beef up security in and outside their premises. And the Accra Mall appears to be no exception. But it has come to the notice of NEAT FM that, the closed-circuit television cameras (CCTV), which have been installed at the Accra Mall to monitor behavior and activities of shoppers and shop owners, in the bid to protecting them, are defective. This came to light after one of the shop owners, who wants to remain anonymous, requested for a playback of the surveillance videos to help unravel a theft case. To his dismay, he was told the cameras were out of service after many days of asking. This brings the safety of shoppers and leaseholders at the shopping precinct in question but the General Manager of the Accra Mall denied the story, saying no such incident has been brought to his attention. Mr. Joseph Amo Mensah, who admitted that surveillance in and around the Mall is not 100% because there are blind spots where cameras are unable to cover, stressed that security at the mall has been reinforced since the Westgate incident and the public safety therefore is assured. He further stated that there is maximum security at the basement of the Mall, which houses majority of the shops, due to the physical presence of security guards coupled with fully functional surveillance cameras. Nonetheless, as at the time of going to bed, the shop owner who broke the news to NEAT FM had not been able to get to the bottom of the theft case because the CCTV recordings at the basement can still not be accessed.
