Koforidua Polytechnic holds 18th Matriculation

Out of 4,466 students who applied for admission to the Koforidua Polytechnic, a total of 4,224 applicants were offered admission to pursue various programmes. At the close of registration, 2,800 students had registered as fresh students of the Polytechnic, with 61 per cent being males and 39 per cent females. Professor Reynolds Okai, Rector of the Polytechnic, disclosed this at the 18th Matriculation ceremony of the school. He said at the close of registration, 107 students had registered for the Bachelor of Technology (B-Tech) programme and that constituted four per cent of the total number of registered students. At the close of registration, 2,289 students had registered for the Higher National Diploma (HND) programmes and this constitutes 82 per cent of the total number of registered students. Professor Okai said with the registration of 2,800 new students this year, compared to 2,302 last year, student population now stood at 6,784. He indicated that the Polytechnic this year added five Bachelor of Technology and one HND programmes to its academic menu. Starting with only two HND programmes; Marketing and Purchasing and Supply, 16 years ago, Koforidua Polytechnic now offers six B-Tech programmes in Automotive Engineering, Telecommunication Engineering, Renewable Energy Systems Engineering, Building Technology, Procurement Management and Accounting and HND in 15 disciplines, he said. Professor Okai advised students to always use dialogue and not confrontation to solve their problems, reminding them that any disruption in the academic calendar would be damaging. He challenged them to take their studies seriously and not to hesitate to approach their lecturers to discuss problems with them, urging students not fall foul of both academic and non-academic rules and regulations of the school. Each year students are withdrawn for poor academic performances and cheating during examinations and registration. If you know why you are here, you will never want to be part of these groups in future, he said.
