Investigate Adenta killing - MP

The Member of Parliament (MP) for Effutu Constituency in the Central Region, Alex Afenyo Markin is calling for an independent inquiry into the killing of a young man in Adenta on Monday. The Police shot and killed the young man they described as a land-guard who attempted to prevent the police officer from demolishing structures in Adenta. In an interview with Citi News, Mr. Markin stated that enforcing the law requires professional patience in the heat of provocations, if the police take pleasure in this shoot and kill or being reactive at the least provocation, at the end of the day it will lead to some mistrust between the public and the role they play to protect us. He described the growing trend of shoot and kill by the police is worrying adding that what is reported in the media is always a one sided story as the Police cannot be trusted due to these developments. He maintained that the Attorney Generals department and CHRAJ must lead in the investigations saying, this incident must be properly investigated and we cannot leave it to the police to investigate it themselves. Meanwhile, the MP for the Adentan Constituency, Nii Ashie Moore is demanding an apology from the Greater Accra Police Command following the killing. The Police have maintained the young man was a land guard who tried to attack a police officer during the demolition exercise by city authorities in the area. But Mr. Ashie Moore has dismissed completely the labeling of the young man. He said: The deceased person is not a land guard, he is a member of the Adenta palace, I think the police have been on so much of a defensive side I think the police should come out and apologize to the family. However, the Commander of Upper Swat Unit at the Police Headquarters superintendent Theodore Hlormenu, has insisted the police did the right thing following the attack by the cutlass wielding land guards in the area.
