GNAT Says It Will Enforce Its Code Of Conduct

The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) on Wednesday sent a strong signal to its members to adhere to its Code of Conduct as the executive body would strictly hold members accountable. Mr. Peter T. Korda, GNAT Public Relations Officer (PRO), told the Ghana News Agency in an interview that teachers must abide by the constitution of the Association in order to promote the interests and welfare of the profession. GNAT Code of Conduct enjoins its members to commit to the student, the community and the profession. We believe that the quality of the service of the education profession directly influences the future of the nation and its citizens, he said. We therefore exert every effort to raise education standards, to improve our service, to promote a climate in which the exercise of professional judgment is encouraged and to achieve conditions which attract persons worthy of trust to careers in education, he said. Mr Korda said a high standard of education was necessary for the preservation and development of a democratic society; as major stakeholders we will ensure that we play our role effectively and expect other bodies to create the enabling environment for us to deliver. He said the association would continue to promote high academic standards, professional competence and exemplary conduct and co-operate with government in the pursuit of educational advancement. GNAT will vigorously promote the interest of teachers and secure for them attractive conditions of service that will retain them in the profession, whilst ensuring the provision of internal economic and other relevant welfare services to them, he said. On the new executives, Mr Korda commended the delegates at the biennial delegates conference for contributing to the success of the conference and called for unity and support for the executives. He urged the new executives to study GNAT Constitution and understand their mandates to avoid overlapping of administrative, political and operational function, which creates conflicts. The PRO made it known that all executives elected under the political branch were not to perform duties which cannot be found in the Associations constitution.
