The Tema Station Welfare Committee of the Ghana Private Roads Transport Union (GPRTU), has kick started the process of introducing a dress code for its drivers, in the popular lorry terminal. The process, which has been started with the Tema Station- kaneshie driver�s branch on pilot basis, will be fully rolled out to all the drivers in the Tema station terminal near the Ministries. The drivers are billed to wear a white shirt with a tie, on Tuesday any shirt with a tie and an African wear on Friday to boost their morale behind the wheel. Briefing The Herald on this new development, Mr Emmanuel Ankrah, the Branch Chairman of Kaneshie �Tema station route, who also double as the Treasurer for the Welfare Committee said, the introduction of the dress code was to correct the wildly held notion that drivers are illiterates who dress shabbily in their field of profession. He said, the decision to prescribe a dress code for the drivers was to support the Accra Metropolitan Assembly�s(AMA�s) decision to transform the transport industry in the region as part of the millennium city project. He said, drivers now have prescribed dress code for Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday to enable them, look presentable behind the steering wheel. He said, the introduction of the dress code on pilot basis has improved discipline among drivers in the terminal and among driver�s mate and their passengers. He noted that the dress code has further boosted the confidence and morale of the drivers and had rekindled their orientation as professionals behind the steering wheel. On his part, Mr William Oquaye, the Chairman of the Welfare Committee of the Tema Station GPRTU added that since the committee engaged the services of the personnel of Zoomlion Waste Management Company to tidy up the terminal after a day�s business, sanitation challenges have reduced. He further explained that the bad sanitation in the terminal in years past, was due to some financial demands the managers of the Jakora waste company Limited, the handlers of the sanitation in the terminal made, before ensuring sanitation in the terminal. He said, to correct the situation, the committee increased the token paid by the traders in the terminal to enable the committee the remedy the sanitation problems in the terminal. He was hopeful this year will be a fruitful year for members of the union and spur the committee on to effect changes in the management of the terminal. He was quick to add that last year was a daunting year for the union because of the petty bickering and some pending court issues which draw back the work of the committee. He noted the union led by it past executives and the current GPRTU Regional Chairman, Mr Robert Sabbah, had been able to settle all the matters out of court. He noted that the settle of cases has given a clean bill of sheet for the managers of the terminal to pursue its vision for the terminal and improve upon the lot of drivers.
