7,000 For Prison

About 7,000 Ghanaians are likely to be jailed this year for various offences. The Finder�s investigations have revealed that an average of 7,014 Ghanaians were convicted for various offences each year since 2010. According to the Ghana Prisons Service, 7,942 people were sent to prison in 2010. They comprised 7,690 males and 252 females. In 2011, 7,011 people were sentenced for various offences, comprising 6,788 males and 223 females. According to the Service, 6,090 individuals � comprising 5,924 males and 166 females � were convicted of various offences in 2012. Currently, 14,416 people are said to be locked up in the various prisons nationwide. However, conviction rates between 2010 and 2012 decreased by 23.3%. In a related development, the Service is said to be facing a number of challenges. These include accommodation and transport. The Service says 70% of its vehicles are not roadworthy.
