Goldsmith Fined GH10,000 For Unauthorized Gun Shots

An Accra Circuit Court, presided over by His Lordship, Francis Obiri, has fined a goldsmith, Kwao Tettey Alexandar, a sum of GH10, 000 with two sureties to be justified, one of which must be from a public officer for firing warning shots at night, in an open space without authority. His action was also said to have caused damage to an electric cable, resulting in a power outage to residents at Race Course, a suburb of Accra, where he resides. The case of the prosecutor said that both the complainant and the accused person are residents of Race Course and that during the month of April, 2013, Mr. Kwao Tettey Alexandar was attacked, beaten by some people, who had promised to come back. Due to the blackout and damages caused, Mr. Kwao Alexandar had to leave the area for fear of his life until December 2013, when he acquired a pump action gun for self protection. The accused person, since acquiring the gun, used to fire warning shots at night in an open space in front of his house to scare off his attackers, the prosecuting officer, Patrick Morkeh, told the court. On January 19, 2014, at about 5:30am, the accused person was reported to have fired several shots in front of his house and in the process, causing damage to one electrical cable that connects power to residents of the area. According to the prosecutor, some young men around, including the complainant, called to inform the Odorkor police patrol team who arrived on time to arrest the accused person to assist investigation. Two packets of cartridges and a gun were retrieved from Mr. Alexanders room. Twelve used cartridges were also found within the compound and on the street around the accused persons house.
