Damba Festival Suspended

The Upper East regional Security Council has asked the Mamprusis in Bawku to suspend their intention to celebrate this years Damba festival until further notice. This became necessary after discussions with elders of the Mamprusis community in Bawku. Speaking to Citi News, the Upper East Regional Police Commander, DCOP Alex Quainoo said the Mamprusis were asked to suspend the festival to settle internal conflicts at the region. We are not discriminating; we just asked them to suspend it. We have given them up to Thursday so that whatever was not done right will be done well. The Damba festival is celebrated by the Mamprusis. The main venue of the celebration is Bawku and its environs. It is held between the months of July and August. Originally linked with Islam to mark the birth of Mohammed, the festival has gradually taken on a traditional rather than Islamic tone. The 2-day festival is celebrated in the towns of Dagbon, Gonjaland, Mamprusiland and Nanumba land.
