Say No To GM Foods - Samia Nkrumah

A leading member of the Coalition for Farmers Rights and Advocacy against Genetically Modified Organisms, Samia Yaaba Nkrumah has declared zero tolerance for attempts to introduce Genetically Modified Foods into the nations food supply chain. She said the group will not relent in its efforts at ensuring that the GMOs are not introduced in the country. In an interview with Citi News, the Convention Peoples Party (CPP) Chairperson argued that implementing the Genetically Modified Foods in the country will affect the productivity of local farmers whose economic mainstay is subsistence farming. This is not a priority in Ghana and in Africa to be specific and we must be alert to the threat that its introduction could cause; there is a whole trend worldwide that is trying to sell seeds invented by a few transnational globalized companies. She fumed, We dont need that monopoly over our farmers; we dont need something that will impoverish and put the livelihood of our farmers at stake. Samia Nkrumah implied that the negative consequences of the GMOs on the health of Ghanaians could endanger the nations human resource base. Serious health issues could face us if we allow the Genetically Modified Foods to become a turbulence in our country; what we have is a competitive advantage of organic farming and we must hold onto that. Samia Nkrumah who led the Anti-GMO campaigners in a demonstration in Accra said the group will continue to mount pressure on government to stop the proposal.
