In what obviously a baby theft at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) with nurses as the chief suspects, the joy of a woman at becoming a mother for the first time has been replaced with grief after the nurses who took the newly-born baby boy away to clean him returned moments later his mother he was dead. Suwaiba Abdul Mumin of Adukrom in Kumasi had been going for antenatal care at the Amina Memorial Maternity clinic but was transferred to the KATH on the day she was scheduled to deliver. She subsequently delivered at about 3:00 am on Wednesday, February 5, 2014. The child, alive and kicking, was placed on the happy mother�s chest for a while. She was even told the child weighs 3kg. The nurses then told her they were taking the baby away to clean him. A few minutes later, they returned to sell Suwaiba the baby was dead. The shocked mother asked to see the dead baby but she was told the baby cannot be found. One nurse is alleged to have told her the baby may have mistakenly added to the trash and burnt. Then Suwaiba was discharged to go home. When the police went to the hospital after a report had been made to them by the traumatized mother�s family, they were told by the nurses on duty that their colleagues who delivered the baby had closed and gone home. A health personnel this paper talked to said the excuse of not being on duty as the nurses told the police is a none starter because there is always handling over notes when nurses are going off duty and there is an incident book in which the incident is recorded. The health worker said the Incident book must contain who reported the death and who certified it. He therefore called for the police to arrest all the nurses on duty when the baby was delivered. Now, a showdown is looming also relatives of Sumaiba from Aboabo also in Kumasi are poised for a showdown with the nurses at the hospital and nothing will stop them until they get their child back, dead or alive.
