Rail Line Linking Diamond Cement, Lome Port Completed

A rail line connecting the Diamond Cement Ghana Limited factory at Aflao to the Lome Port has been completed. The 2.5-kilometre railway, on which construction works started in December 2012, is expected to be inaugurated by President John Dramani Mahama in March this year. The rail line will help the company to carry raw materials from the port to the factory for the production of cement. In effect, it would help decongest the roads of heavy trucks carrying raw materials to the factory and increase productivity of the company. The Volta Regional Minister, Mr Joseph Nii Laryea Afotey-Agbo, the Paramount Chief of Aflao Traditional Area, Togbi Amenya Fiti V, and a team of security heads at the Aflao border have inspected the railway project. Briefing the regional minister and his entourage, the General Manager of the company, Tati Rama Roa, said the construction of the railway was very important because the company could not continue to carry all cargo by road. He stated that an invitation would be extended to the Togolese President, Mr Faure Gnassingb, to be part of the inaugural ceremony. Stadium Mr Roa disclosed that management and the traditional council were holding discussions on how to construct a modern stadium for the people of Aflao. The stadium, an addition to recreation centres in the area, would be a place to nurture football stars. Togbi Amenya Fiti, who confirmed that, said, I met the MD two weeks ago and he has promised to construct a modern stadium for the people of Aflao. The only problem is finding a suitable site for the project, and it is part of our plans to have the President cut the sod for commencement of the construction on the day he inaugurates the railway line. Mr Roa expressed appreciation to the regional minster for the support he offered the company during a confrontation between it and builders last year and expressed the hope that the cordial relationship between the company and the Regional Co-ordinating Council would continue to exist. Assurance to the company The regional minister assured the company that the government was ready to assist it to address its challenges and support its operations to bring development to the area and jobs to the people. He urged the company to expand its operations to the other regions within the country to create more jobs for the youth.
