Twenty-Seven Sachet water producing companies in the Tamale metropolis of the Northern Region have been closed down by the Food and Drug Authority (FAD) for operating without permit. The Northern Regional Officer of the FDA Mr. Sylvester Oteng Kyei in an interview with The 'Ghanaian Times' yesterday said the affected companies who were also operating illegally has failed to meet safety standards. According to him, none of companies had registered with the FDA which made it very difficult to monitor and regulate their operations, adding that the authority could not guarantee the safety of the water produced by these companies. He said the closure was part of FDA�s efforts to get rid of fake or unwholesome products in the region. Mr. Kyei said the exercise would be extended to all parts of the region and advised all sachet water producers to regularize their operations to avoid the closure of their firms. He advised consumers to stop patronizing sachet water produced under unhygienic environments. Menunatu Habib, a resident of Tamale commended the FDA for the exercise noting that most of the sachet water were produced under unhygienic conditions in the metropolis.
