A gang of five men who attacked the police yesterday for allegedly killing their colleague at Asylum Down last Saturday has been arrested by the Kotobabi Police. The five suspects are Abdullah Musah, 20; Salifu Surakah, 18; Samuel Homadzi, 17; Alex Kwao, 20; and Awule Suleman, 38. Abdullah is a junior high school (JHS) pupil of the Ahamasu L.A. School in the Volta Region; Salifu is also a form three student of Kimbu Senior High School in Accra; and Samuel is a form one student of St. Michael SHS in Aburi. Alex Kwao is an SHS graduate of the Action SHS, Madina, while Awule is a carpenter. According to Superintendent Yawo Tettegah of the Airport Police, they received a tip off at about 11.00am yesterday that some people were mobilising to attack the police to revenge the death of their colleague who they accused the police of killing. Not long afterwards, the mob attacked police patrol officers on duty at Mamobi along the Nima Highway to Kotobabi. The police then mobilised and arrested the culprits. During the attack, a Toyota 4x4 belonging to the police was vandalised by the mob and a police motorbike has also been reported missing. Superintendent Yawo Tettegah of the Airport Police said the Kotobabi Police Command had to call for re-enforcement to contain the situation. Personnel were pulled from other sections to put the rioters under control. He said the five suspects have since been transferred to the Accra Regional Command for further investigations. Last Saturday a young man identified as Sadam Sulley Abdulai was gunned down behind an unregistered Hyundai motorbike which he was riding with a colleague at a drinking spot in Asylum Down. According to eyewitnesses, the deceased had earlier opened fire, killing one William Sarpong, 35 years, a security man with the Ghana Airport Company, who died instantly. This led to a reprisal attack from another group, during which Sadam Abdulai was killed. In an interview, DSP Tetteh, Public Relations Officer of Accra Region, said the police were later called in and the patrol team went to the scene of the incident and succeeded in arresting 11 people.
