Kpong Water Plant To Be Shut Down

Residents of eastern Accra have been told to brace themselves for an acute water shortage because the Kpong Water Works is going to be shut down. The plant is scheduled to be shut down for maintenance at 6 am on Thursday, February 27, 2014. People living in parts of the capital served by the Kpong Water Treatment Plant have therefore been urged by the Ghana Water Company Limited to store enough water. The exercise is expected to last for one week. Residents should therefore look forward to water running through their taps on 2 March 2014, Chief Manager in charge of Public Relations at the Ghana Water Company Limited, Michael Agyemang said. The best bet is for you (consumers) to store water, he told Joy FMs Top Story on Wednesday. Areas to be affected include Tema, Ashaiman, Michel Camp, Lashibi and their environs. Others are Kotobabi, Pig Farm, Nima, Maamobi, Abelenke and Dzorwulu. Also to be affected are areas at Akwapim mountains through to Somanya in the Eastern Region. Mr. Agyemang said due to the stabilisation supply from the Weija treatment plant, reservoirs at Weija, 37 Military Hospital and Ashaiman have been filled up to supply hospitals, boarding schools and institutions rendering essential services. He asked assemblies with water reservoirs to inform the water company to fill them. Meanwhile, the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission says it is satisfied with the plans submitted by the Ghana Water Company Limited to mitigate the impact of the shutdown on consumers. Director of Public Relations and External Affairs at the PURC, Nana Yaa Jantuah said the PURC hopes the Weija plant would not disappoint in the course of the week-long shutdown at Kpong treatment plant. She assured consumers that contingency plans have been put in place to monitor the exercise and ensure that consumers are not unduly affected.
