The Northern Regional Chapter of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has condemned the burning of Radio Justice in Tamale by some angry youth based at Lamashegu, a suburb of Tamale. A statement issued by the Northern Regional Chapter of GJA in Tamale on Tuesday signed by the Regional Chairman, Mr Caesar Abagali, said �The action of the youth does not only put the work of media personnel in danger but also denies the media the needed freedom to operate.� The statement said �It is sad that the Media in the region are sometimes seen as enemies instead of being partners in development and we are appealing to the security agencies to go the extra mile and identify the perpetrators and bring them to book to serve as a disincentive to others who might want to take similar action.� It also condemned personnel from the Ghana Armed Forces for the seizure and damaging of a camera of a Ghanaian Times photographer at Aboabo on Monday, who had gone there to cover the alleged lynching of a young man. It said the military personnel damaged and seized the camera and an iPad of the photographer, which it described as sad. It said �There has always been a cordial working relationship between the GJA in the region and the military but for them to act unprofessionally by preventing the media from embarking on its duties is not a healthy situation.� The statement appealed to the military high command to investigate the seizure of the camera and replace it immediately. It also appealed to the security agencies to provide adequate security to all media houses in the region to ensure that the media personnel operated in a peaceful environment.
