Hunter Fined For Hunting In Wildlife Reserve

The Half Assini district magistrate�s court has imposed fines totaling 2,400.00 Ghana cedis on a hunter who entered and poached in the Ankasa Game and Wildlife Reserve in the Jomoro District. Dazie Amuzu from Dadwen near Elubo pleaded guilty on all the four charges. He was fined 1,200 Ghana cedis or in default six months imprisonment in hard labour on count one and 1,200 Ghana cedis or in default 24 months imprisonment in hard labour on counts two to four The sentences are to run concurrently. Police Inspector Emmanuel Kumi told the court presided over by Mr Hans Kofi Kpogo that on February 28 officials of the Reserve saw Amuzu and two others now a large smoking animals they had killed in the Reserve. The prosecution said one of the suspects whose name was given as Boateng shot one of the officials, Mr Akwasi Amankwa, and injured him. He said all of the poachers took to their heels but Amuzu was arrested later from his hide-out by the Wildlife officials and handed over to the Mpataba police.
