Chaos As Parents Block UG Road (PHOTOS + VIDEO)

Pupils of the University of Ghana Basic School (UBS) on Monday, had to alight from their cars and walk to their various destination as their parents were not having the approved UG stickers. The angry parents were demonstrating against the Universitys decision to ban the entry of vehicles that do not have the UG stickers displayed on it. The university on Saturday blocked all access routes into the school with the exception of the entrance from the Okponglo intersection. According the angry parents, they can no longer take the disrespectful manner in which the University authorities have handled the issue; forcing their wards to walk about 400 metres to school. Motorists using the university's roads including parents who have children in the basic school located on the campus of the University of Ghana have been asked to purchase a sticker worth Gh400 to have continuous access to the University for a span of one year. The new order comes on the back of a government order for the institution to stop collecting tolls from drivers who use the university's roads. However, parents and guardians who thronged the Westgate of the University of Ghana, which links to Ghana Institute of Public and Management Administration (GIMPA) and its environs, blocked the road in protest of what they describe as, utter disrespect for the pupils of the UBS who do not live on campus. In an exclusive interview, Rev. Acheampong, Vice President of the Parent Teacher Association of UBS explained to Peacefmonline.com that parents do not intend to take the laws of the land into their own hands by blocking access to the University of Ghana but have chosen to hung around the Westgate and wait till their wards close from school. Nonetheless, at the time of filling this report, a closed door meeting between the PTA and the University of Ghana authorities was in session.
