Craddle Care Maternity Trust, a new maternity hospital that offers water birth services to pregnant women has been outdoored in Accra. Water birth is a new global childbirth system that ensures that expectant mothers give birth in water. Proponents are convinced the new system is a safer option to the conventional delivery systems in maternity homes. According to Sarah Serwah Major, Head of Maternal and Child Birth Services at Craddle Care, water birth is a more relaxed and less painful delivery method for mothers than the normal bed delivery. The hospital which is situated along the Spintex Road, also offers services such as pre-pregnancy counselling, antenatal booking, antenatal clinic, normal birth, postnatal care, ultrasound services, parent education classes, blood pressure check, and glucose/diabetes test. Mrs Major in an interview with journalists at the opening of the hospital said their main goal is to make a remarkable difference in maternal healthcare in Ghana. Our aim is to ensure that all women in Ghana experience a healthy pregnancy and a safe childbirth. It is also our vision to empower and educate women to enable them to take responsibility of their own health, she added. We are a UK-style midwifery led unit, set up and run by a UK-trained midwives. We are bringing UK maternal healthcare to Ghana, she said.
