2 Gun-Runners Grabbed

The police in Obuasi have arrested a 60-year-old man with 30 pieces of guns concealed on his room.

Also found in the room of the suspect, Kwasi Owusu, were a quantity of leaves suspected to be Indian hemp, assorted tools for the manufacture of weapons as well as used and live cartridges.

According to Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Kofi Dwumfour Berchie, Obuasi Divisional Police Commander, the suspect was arrested upon a tip-off.

He said on March 23, police personnel at a snap check point on the Obuasi-Dunkwa road, were informed by a driver of a Metro Transit Bus that a suspect, Kwame Nyame 29 had ex-changed an object with another man on board the bus and collected to be a weapon.

Mr. Berchie said based on the information received from the driver, the police decided to mount a search on the bus, the police decided to mount a search on the bus, and when they approached Nyame, he jumped off the buss and took to his heels, but was given a hot chase and arrested at Nyiaeso, in Obuasi.

According to Mr Berchie, though a search on Nyame did not reveal anything incriminating, he led the police to Owusu�s room where a search led to the discovery of the substance and the weapons.

He said weapons retrieved from Owusu�s room included 19 locally-made pistols, a pump action gun and 10 single barreled guns.

ACP Berchie said the police were conducting investigations to establish whether Owusu had been involved in any gang robbery.

He said the two suspects who were currently in police custody, would be put before court as soon as investigations were concluded.
