Engineers Urged To Assist Assemblies

The Ghana Institute of Engineers has advised engineers to make their expertise available to district assemblies to help the assemblies address their engineering challenges. The Vice-President of the institute, Dr Kwame Boakye, who said this, indicated that the knowledge acquired by the engineers during their training put them at an advantageous position to identify and solve complex problems. Dr Boakye was speaking at the fourth Women in Engineering (WINE) forum, which had the theme: �Providing sustainable solutions for improved quality of life, the role of engineers�. According to him, one of the objectives of the institute is to advise the government on using technology to improve the life of the people. He added, �This is our role and if we do not do this then we are not doing anything�. The forum The programme, which was part of activities marking the 2014 Engineering Week Celebration, brought together women engineers and students to deliberate on how they could contribute their quota to providing sustainable solutions for the benefit of the country and its citizens. The programme was also used to launch the official website of WINE. Dr Boakye noted that women form half of the population; therefore, they have a lot to contribute to the nation�s development. Women Engineers The Executive Partner of Arthur Energy Advisors, Ing Harriette Amissah-Arthur, who was the guest speaker for the occasion, called for the repositioning of women in the profession to enable them to play their respective roles to improve the life of all citizens. She also advised the women to endeavour to make an impact on society. A representative of the Association of Professional Women Engineers, Nigeria, Mrs Yetunde Olaniyo, said women could provide sustainable solutions for the benefit of society at no cost, and called on them to take advantage of their position as engineers to impact society positively. She explained that for every project to be sustainable, there was the need to take into account its economic, environmental and social impacts on society, and urged the women to bear in mind all of these when providing solutions to improve the lives of Ghanaians.
