The President, John Mahama, yesterday filed his tax returns and reiterated the need for Ghanaians to pay their taxes regularly to the state, to enable the government to embark on socio-economic development infrastructure.
It was the second time Mr Mahama was paying his tax to the state, since becoming President of Ghana.
He submitted a cheque for an undisclosed sum to Mrs Comfort Boahene-Osafo, Commissioner-in-charge of Domestic Tax Revenue of Ghana Revenue Authority at his office at the Flagstaff House.
In his remarks after filing his tax, President Mahama indicated that though the 1992 Constitution exempted him from paying tax as President, he honours his tax obligations from proceeds from the sale of his book and from a family farming venture.
He observed that very often, people claimed that once their taxes were deducted from source, they were not obliged to pay any more taxes, and indicated that extra income from any other venture required the payment of tax.
Receiving the cheque, Mrs Boohene-Osafo lauded the exemplary leadership exhibited by the President and urged other Ghanaians to follow suit by honouring their tax obligations for the betterment of mother Ghana.
Echoing the sentiments of the President, she said, Ghanaians were mandated to also pay tax on extra earnings and expressed the readiness of her outfit to widen the tax net to generate more revenue for development.
She promised to submit the tax credit certificate to the president.
