Transport Unions in the Ashanti Region have called off a planned demonstration which was scheduled for, April 1 after an intervention by the Regional Security Council. The transport unions, namely PROTOA, GPRTU and Co-operative unions on Friday March 20 issued a week�s ultimatum to hit the streets over alleged military harassments. They had accused the Kumasi Mayor, Kojo Bonsu of using police and military personnel to harass drivers in the metropolis in the name of decongesting the city. The unions were ready to among other things prevent any union transport vehicles from either moving in or out of Kumasi, pack all their cars, and hit the streets to register their displeasure. But after an emergency meeting with executives of the unions on Monday, the demonstration was suspended in the interim. Disclosing the new development to Ultimate Radio, Industrial Relations Officer of the GPRTU, Reverend Ellis Owusu Ansah explained �we were called by the regional Security Council and we were assured that our grievances have been laid before him. He pleaded with us to call off the action and wait for the incoming Ashanti Regional Minister to take post to address our concerns.� A meeting has been scheduled for Thursday between the transport unions and the Regional Security Coordinator. The unions told Ultimate Radio, proceedings on Thursday will be a major decider for their next line of action.
