Chinese Pair Trawling In Ghana Waters

The Awudum Chief fisherman of Tema Newtown, Nii Odamtten has alleged that Chinese Fishermen still pair trawls in the countrys waters. This activity, Nii Odamtten said has contributed to a decrease in the catch of Ghanas fishermen who compete with them in the waters. The chief Fisherman in an interview with Today in Tema said Chinese fishermen unlike their local counterparts go for fishing all the days of the week and also make use of bigger equipment which do not only increase their yield but also drives smaller fishes away into the deep seas thus making it extremely difficult for the local artisans to make a meaningful catch. Pair trawling is destroying all natural resources in the sea and government must come in to save the fishing industry he lamented. The use of light and chemicals for fishing, Nii Odamtten said is also causing the fishermen a lot and hence called on his colleagues to desist from the act. Government must also help check the Chinese and prevent them from making use of pair trawling if they seriously want to keep us in the business, he added.
