NADMO Warns Of Heavy Rains In Sekondi/Takoradi

The Western regional office of National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) has hinted of heavy rains and flooding in the Sekondi/Takoradi Metropolis and other parts of the region ahead of this years raining season. The flooding however, is mainly due to human behaviour. It said places in the metropolis which hitherto were reserved areas for road construction and drainage have seriously been encroached upon by private developers. Speaking to the Daily Graphic, the Regional NADMO Coordinator, Mr Jaffet Baidoo warned that if the Sekondi/Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly (STMA) and other assemblies did do not act immediately to demolish these structures and desilt the drains, they could experience heavy flooding in areas that originally did not get flooded. Flash points Some of the flush points identified by NADMO include Anaji-Old-Brigade, Takoradi New Site, OIC school, the runway of the Takoradi Airport, Kokompe, Market Circle, Old John Sabah Road and Collins Avenue. Mr Baidoo indicated that with the current clamour for the land in the metropolis, developers have completely disregarded the laid down plans by municipal, metropolitan and district assemblies, which spelt out areas clearly earmarked for social infrastructure. The regional coordinator said, the authorities have been prompted on the impending dangers. Heavy rains in June 2013 led to widespread flooding in Sekondi Takoradi.
