NPP Tells Government: Honour The Memory of Aliu Mahama

The National Chairman of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Jake Obetsebi Lamptey has called on the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Mahama-led government to name the Tamale multi-purpose stadium after former late vice-president Alhaji Aliu Mahama. Jake who was speaking at the NPPs National Delegate Congress in Tamale to elect new leaders for the party opined that, it will be appropriate for government to bestow on the late president who was the only Northerner to have occupied the highest position as a vice president for two terms. Tamale Stadium is a multi-purpose stadium. It is used mostly for football matches and serves as the home stadium of Real Tamale United. It hosted some matches during the 2008 African Cup of Nations. The stadium which is currently hosting the largest opposition party in Ghana, NPP, has a capacity of 21, 017. It was completed in 2008 by the Shanghai Construction Group of China when Alhaji Aliu Mahama was the vice-president to President John Agyekum Kufour. After this death on 16 November 2012 at the age of 66 from a heart-related condition and complications from a stroke, the NPP however then pleaded with government to name the stadium after him but nothing has been done over the years. Delivering a speech at the congress grounds, the incumbent chairman of the NPP, Jake Obetsebi Lamptey said We use this occasion to remind the government of Ghana of our (NPP) request that this stadium (Tamale Sports Stadium) that was built during Ex-President Kufuor NPP government should be named Alhaji Aliu Mahama Stadium
