OFFICIAL...Ghana: Chopper Crashes Into Sea; 3 Dead, 1 Missing

Three persons are reported dead while one other is still missing when a helicopter crashed into the deep waters around the West Cape Three Points in the Western Region says the Director, Air Traffic Services of the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA), Albert Taylor. The chopper, operated by Volta River Aviation with Call Sign Tuhaa, crashed into the sea near one of the oil rigs at Cape three points 20 nautical miles off Takoradi on Thursday afternoon. Among the dead are the two pilots of the chopper that had taken off from the Takoradi Airport at 12:57pm on a 12 to a 15-minute flight to a new oil rig Jack Ryag belonging to Luk Oil for appraisal and completion of wells duties. The helicopter was expected at its destination at about 1:10pm, however two hours passed without any sign of it. Speaking in an interview with Peace FM, during the station's News Bulletin at 6PM, the GCAA Director of Air Traffic Services revealed that there were eight persons (six workers and two crew members) on board the helicopter. According to him, four of the eight persons on board have been rescued after a thorough search and rescue operation involving Ghana Air Force, Tullow, NHV Aviation, PHI and the GCAA was mounted. Though the cause of the crash is unclear, some have attributed it to poor weather conditions. Meanwhile, a search for the missing person is underway. More soon...
