Traders Threaten Borla Demo Against AMA ..As Filth Takes Over Tema Lorry Station

Traders and drivers operating at the Tema Lorry Station in Accra are threatening to stage what they describe as a Borla demonstration against authorities of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly for failing to collect piles of garbage at the entrance of the station. According to the traders, the stench emanating from the uncollected garbage was not only causing nuisance to the environment, but serious health implication to them, as well as passengers and the customers, who patronize the station. Some of the trades who spoke to The Enquirer said the piles of uncollected garbage at the entrances to the station have been left there for well over two weeks and the City authorities are either busy somewhere or care less about the health risks accompanying the stench. Ms. Comfort Ababio, a trader in second-hand ladies braziers, told this reporter that the piles of garbage at the station have become a big problem to them for some time now. She said officers from the Accra Metropolitan Assembly comes to the station every working day to collect taxes from them but pay no concern to the stench coming from the garbage and its associated health implication to the people they collect the taxes. According to her, the waste trucks hardly come to the station to collect waste and if they do, they normally collect a few and leave the rest for the traders and sometimes the station managers to hire tricycles to collect them. In addition, a bookman at the station who gave his name as Nii Nortey said attention has been drawn to the AMA about the uncollected garbage for over a week, but the authorities seem not to care about the situation. He said for some time now garbage collection to the station has become a problem between ,operations at the station and city authorities, adding if the situation persists they would have no option but to stage a demonstration against AMA. Look , My brother, this huge borla has been here for more than a week, but no one seems to care, the stench is killing us. I sit here every time to collect money from drivers and this money goes to the AMA, yet they dont want to take care of us, it is bad, Nii Nortey lamented. The traders however concluded that, if the problem of uncollected garbage continues at the Tema Lorry Station for another week, they would embark in borla demonstration to press the city authorities to do their work. They intimated that, the health of the citizens is taken for granted by the authorities and that it was time for them to demand their civil right to good and healthier environment.
