Ghana Law School To Incorporate Free Legal Aid Services Into Its Curriculum

The Ghana Law School is to fully incorporate Free Legal Aid Services into its curriculum from the 2015/2016 academic year. The School intends running a sustained Legal Aid Clinic where its students and volunteer lawyers will provide free legal services to people who seek justice but cannot afford. The Director of the Ghana Law School Kwesi Prempeh-Eck said this in a speech read on his behalf by Hubert Sevor, a Law lecturer at a Legal Outreach Programme organized by the Justice Foundation in collaboration with the MP for La Dedekotopon, Niii Amasa Namoale in La. He said the General Legal Council is backing the School to ensure that the Free Legal Clinic becomes part of the training of law students. The MP for La Dedekotopon, Nii Amasa Namoale observed that peace is a prerequisite for development and without justice it is difficult to guarantee peace. He said the outreach programme was to help the people solve their legal challenges to enable them to be at peace with each other. The Executive Director of the Justice Foundation Kweku Agyeman Budu said the Foundation decided to have the programme at La due to the prevalence of basic human rights concerns, domestic violence and land related litigations in the community. He stated that the legal outreach programme will be extended to other areas in the country to bring justice to the door steps of the people. Over thirty students and practicing lawyers took part in the exercise.
