Prez Office To Probe DCE Over Auction Car

BARELY A year that Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives who were appointed into office were cautioned to live humble lifestyles, the same way the President, John Dramani Mahama carries himself, some appointees representing Ghanas chief executive in their areas are displaying blatant abuse of power. The district chief executive for Central Tongu, Mary Agbenyenu, for the past five months has chased a Nissan Patrol vehicle bought by one Celestine Agormeda during an auction at the assembly. The vehicle has been impounded at the Adidome police station over the refusal of Celestine to re-sell the vehicle to the political and administrative head. According to sources at the assembly, the DCE intended to buy the vehicle but, was beaten by the highest bidder, Celestine Agormeda, who offered GHc2, 200.00 for the car. The office of the president says it considers the issue very serious and has commenced investigations into the subject. Speaking to the Daily Heritage in an interview, brother of the victim, Maxwell Nipa, said on January 7, 2014, her sister bought an auction car at the local assembly but, was shortly confiscated by the Adidome police. The DCE has been on the neck of my sister to re-sell the vehicle to her. On the day of the auctioning, the price the representatives of Mary Agbenyenu offered was a low amount compared to what we offered. The police claim they would only release the car to us when they are asked to. The car was valued by the state transport company and we bought at the price they put out, he lamented. Mr. Nipa wondered whether there was a law prohibiting people from using auction cars that they have acquired through the legally mandated process. The reason ascribed by the DCE for wanting the car was that she wanted to surprise her father with that gift. When we declined, she shifted goal posts with another reason that she needed the vehicle for the assembly. It is not fair the way we are being treated, he said. Efforts to reach the Adidome District Police Commander, ASP Eris Opata, proved futile as calls made to his phone call went unanswered. The DCE for Central Tongu, Mary Agbenyenu, also declined to respond to the issue.
